Preparing Soil for Fall Planting
Typical soil issues in Central Texas include:
- Low organic matter
- Poor water holding capacity
- Poor drainage
- Low fertility
- pH extremes
To beat the natural soil conditions of Central Texas, consider the following for your garden soil:
- Add lots of composted organic matter
- Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize
- Throughly spade or till the soil with both the fertilizer and compost to mix everything together
- Select early maturing varieties of plants since the fall growing season is so short in Texas
- When plants, make sure the hole the plant is going in is throughly soaked to beat the hot days
These mosts will become much more full when we are in a better planting season, but for now prepare your soil for delicious fall planting!
