Texas in July is not only miserable for humans to be outside but also plants… While this may not be the best planting or growing time in Texas, it is the ideal time to prep your garden for the fall.

Here are the few things you can plant in July:

Early – Mid Month: 

• Pumpkin

Mid – Late Month: 

• Corn
• Eggplant
• Peppers
• Southern Pea
• Tomatoes
• Winter Squash

All Month: 

• Amaranth
• Okra

Preparing Soil for Fall Planting

Typical soil issues in Central Texas include:

• Low organic matter
• Poor water holding capacity
• Poor drainage
• Low fertility
• pH extremes

To beat the natural soil conditions of Central Texas, consider the following for your garden soil:

• Add lots of composted organic matter
• Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize
• Throughly spade or till the soil with both the fertilizer and compost to mix everything together
• Select early maturing varieties of plants since the fall growing season is so short in Texas
• When plants, make sure the hole the plant is going in is throughly soaked to beat the hot days
